“Design a Human”, Fundamentals Studio with Chris Fahey, Fall 2010

Challenge: The prompt for this project was to “design a Human” and to identify how this particular Human behaves in various contexts and circumstances. How does it think? How does it interact with its users? What are its key features?

Solution: I focused on the police officer making a standard traffic stop; a seemingly banal everyday activity. As I quickly discovered, motor vehicle stops are extremely dangerous for police officers. Many police officers have been injured or killed in these situations. A set of appropriate actions at various descision-points can help make stops more routine and less risky. However, judgement and constant awareness is always necessary.

Even while conducting what appears to be a low risk motor vehicle stop, a police officer must always be aware of indicators of elevated risk that require alternative action.
